How do you feel about naps?

I happen to love a good nap. It’s not something that I do every day, but when I'm tired and there's time, I'm down. I do not have a schedule or a strategy for my naps. I just nap, and I wake up when I wake up.

I learned recently that this might make me an inefficient napper. Here’s what happened. I had a conversation with somebody who told me that naps should either be 20 or 90 minutes. No exceptions. That felt unreasonable but then I googled it and it turns out that google recommends setting an alarm for naps to keep them under 30 minutes to avoid “sleep inertia.”

So now I’m wondering if I’m an undisciplined napper? Is my lack of discipline for naps related to my occasional insomnia? I’m also wondering if the rest of humanity is really out there setting alarms for their naps. Hit reply and let me know your thoughts on napping. Christine Davies

Davies is a hospital chaplain and spiritual director in New Jersey, and her road to that work winds through an EMT certification at 16, a pre-med track, an epilepsy diagnosis nobody saw coming, seminary, social work, cognitive behavioral therapy, and one very important conversation over a plate of spaghetti.

Some of us think we know what we want to do with our lives until life interrupts the plan. For Christine Davies, that interruption came in the form of a medical diagnosis that upended her original path toward medicine and eventually pointed her toward something she hadn't anticipated: becoming the person in the hospital room who isn't there to treat your body, but to tend to your spirit.
