Amy Says…
There is neighborhood drama near me

I live on a street that gets a lot of school traffic and we’ve been selected to get a speed bump. There’s been a lot of discussion and group texts between groups of neighbors for months.

I have tried to stay out of the discussion. I’m proud of myself that I’ve mostly succeeded.

This week, construction began. In the process, they dug up something that impacted my internet connection for an entire day.

It turns out that I can handle speed bumps but living without wifi is aggravating..

On the plus side, the city put up a barricade blocking off everything that wasn’t local traffic and that has been fantastic. I feel like this is a real-life example of boundaries. That relates to the stories I’m sharing this week.

Career | Your Work-Life Boundaries Just Disappeared—Now What?

Emily Guerra

When the world stopped in March 2020, Emily Guerra's career stopped with it. As a wedding and event planner in Los Angeles, she watched her industry vanish overnight. Weddings were canceled, events disappeared, and the work that had consumed most of her days, evenings, and weekends simply ceased to exist. For someone who thrived on organization and structure, the sudden absence of both felt disorienting. But what seemed like a devastating loss would ultimately force Guerra to reimagine not just what she did for work, but how she approached work itself. Her journey from event planning to mindful productivity coaching reveals how crisis can strip away the elements of our careers that no longer serve us and create space for something more aligned with who we actually are.

Family | The Truth About Family Estrangement & Self-Discovery

The email arrived like countless others before it, but this time something was different. Karen C.L. Anderson sat staring at the message from her mother, feeling that familiar knot tighten in her stomach. The words on the screen weren't overtly cruel, they never were. Instead, they carried that subtle energetic signature she'd learned to recognize over decades: the implicit demand to stay small, to not outshine, to remain less than. But in 2010, after years of therapy, self-help work, and slowly building her own sense of safety, Karen made a choice that would reshape her entire life. She decided to cut off contact with her mother completely.

Music | One Small Choice Can Change Your Life

Valerie Friedlander

The songs we play on repeat can become the soundtrack to our internal narratives. They validate our moods, reinforce our identities, and sometimes keep us tethered to versions of ourselves we've outgrown. Valerie Friedlander discovered this truth during her senior year of college in 2003, when she realized the melancholic Amy Mann songs she'd been playing on loop were doing more than filling silence—they were shaping how she saw herself and her place in the world.

"I was listening to Amy Mann on repeat, and it was very wallowing in sadness music," Friedlander said. "I remember coming to the realization that I was choosing to listen to the music that was keeping me in that depressive state."
