Amy Says…
Hello {{first_name}} ,

This week you get a very short note from me because I’ve been “on the road.” Like Jack Kerouac except really much more of a wholesome PG-13 Hallmark version of a roadtrip. I have some family events to attend. Instead of flying I decided to drive. That might seem like a strange choice but listen, I made this decision several weeks ago when it seemed like airline travel was going to be a giant hassle pretty much forever. Thankfully that’s resolved but I still made the drive. And I’m also meeting up with a few - hopefully several podcasters who I have only ever met online. I’m enthusiastic about that.

I have two stories to share with you this week. Both are health and wellness related. Jane Pilger shares her story of making an intentional change to her eating habits for herself. She wanted to stop binge eating. Peggy Sharr tells her story of dealing with a rare condition and what it took for her to get a diagnosis. She’s a medical professional so I found this story interesting. I hope that you do too.

Enjoy and I’ll be back in your email next week with more imperfect stories to share.

Binge Eating | What Happens When You Finally Share Your Secret

Jane Pilger

Most people who struggle with binge eating do not look like they are struggling. From the outside, they are the capable ones, the driven ones, the people who seem to have it all figured out. They are running meetings, maintaining relationships, checking every box a successful life is supposed to require. And behind closed doors, in their cars, in their kitchens late at night, they are doing something they believe no one would understand, let alone forgive.

Jane Pilger knows this particular split very well. For more than 25 years, the Albuquerque-based coach and host of the Binge Eating Breakthrough Podcast moved through her career as a CPA, then as president of a commercial real estate association, then as the founder of a women's industry network, all while carrying what she describes as a profound and exhausting secret.

Burning Mouth Syndrome | How to Advocate For Yourself in a Medical Mystery

Imagine waking up every morning with your mouth simultaneously on fire from habanero peppers and scalded from a sip of too-hot coffee, except there is no pepper, no hot coffee, and the burning never stops. That is how Peggy Sharr, a clinical psychotherapist and trauma specialist with 20 years of professional experience, describes her daily reality since late 2021. Her story is not just about an obscure condition most doctors have never heard of. It is about what happens when the medical system fails you, grief and physical illness collide, and you have no choice but to become your own detective.
