Amy Says…
Hello {{first_name}} ,

Even if you don’t have kids in school life often slows down in the summer. BUT the thing that slows things down even more than kids being out of school is sometimes sports.

Most famously The World Cup which doesn’t happen every year is pretty famous for being a global productivity problem as people shift their schedules and their priorities to watch the games. The games have started and the finals aren’t until July 19th. It’s simply massive. The estimate is a 12 billion dollar impact on workplace productivity. I have no idea how anybody would calculate that but it’s a big number.

Of course, for most of my life in the United States we treated soccer as something that was only a youth sport but this summer the games are actually hosted in cities all over North America. Even if you don’t care at all about the games it might impact you.

Will you be watching? Are there World Cup games in your city? Do you have tickets to matches? And now the true test of soccer knowledge, do you understand and can you explain offsides?

This week I have two imperfect stories to share. Enjoy the articles and I’ll be back next week.

Elizabeth Rivas

When the golf cart came around the bend carrying her toward the aisle, Elizabeth Rivas already knew something was wrong. Her partner of five years was being held upright by his parents on either side. By the time she reached the altar of the Dominican Republic wedding she had spent months planning, he could barely stand. She held him with both hands throughout the ceremony. When they went in for their practiced dip kiss, she fell into the sand in her $3,000 dress.

The marriage paperwork was never filed. The relationship was over.

Sisterhood | Building a Business with Your Sister

When Amy Harrington rose through the ranks of Warner Brothers to become the first woman in the history of the entertainment industry to serve as vice president of post production and visual effects, she was surrounded almost exclusively by men. Her sister Nancy, back in Boston running a graphic design business and theater company, was working primarily with female clients. Two very different professional worlds, shaped by the same upbringing and eventually the same conclusion: they wanted out, and they wanted to do whatever came next together.
